The AIS Institutional Data and Data Management (IDDM)
work group provides four main services -
Data Management,
Information
Access and
Information
Modeling,
and SQL Server Database Hosting.
The
Data
Management Service can be thought of as the classical
administration and management for mainframe (DB2 and IMS), NT (SQL
Server) and UNIX (Oracle) databases.
This involves the physical design, implementation and maintenance
of the database as well as data security, data integrity, backup/recovery, performance monitoring, and tuning.
The
Information
Access Service allows end users access to legacy data off-loaded
to our data warehouse which enables decision support and web based
reporting environments. This
service is provided and supported through strong partnerships with
sponsoring departments, IDDM and other ITS functional groups.
This service involves data modeling, extraction, transformation,
cleansing, and off-loading; query formation and optimization; data
analysis and reporting; middleware coordination; training and support;
and web enablment. The
University Data Warehouse
is designed to meet your information access needs, and to assist you in
planning, forecasting, and decision making.
The
Information
Modeling Service has two components; data modeling and process
modeling. We use systems
analysis techniques and data modeling tools to generate the logical and
physical data models. The
logical models provide a view of the database from an end user point of
view. Basically, it describes the information content and the
structure of the database. The
physical model defines the actual record layout, that is, the number of
bytes and format for each data element in the record.
We use data modeling extensively to facilitate internal data
management of institutional data. On
occasion, we have been approached for departmental or localized data
modeling projects and consulting. Process
modeling has been used in capturing the "AS IS" state for
either simple process improvement, wholesale business process
re-engineering, and as part of requirements analysis phase in developing
applications and evaluating purchased applications.
Our
SQL Server Database Hosting
service provides a hosted database solution for administrative units
across the campus. Users maintain their own database schemas, and
IDDM staff maintain the servers - ensuring that routine maintenance and
backup jobs are done with the same level of expertise and commitment
that we have always used in our classical Database Management Service.
